Your class will be in a small group (maximum 4 people) in our beautiful home in central Edinburgh. Lessons begin with a background to the unique and fascinating UNESCO-recognised Garifuna culture, which has a history intertwined with Africa, the UK (including the infamous Henry Dundas of Edinburgh), France, the Caribbean, Central America and beyond.
We have two drum and two maraca sets for our guests. You’ll learn how to hold and strike your large bass “Segunda” drum or shake your "shakas". I will show you a basic rhythm, then I will play alongside you on the smaller Primero drum. I will also sing a traditional Garifuna song while you play. You will learn many traditional Garifuna rhythms, including Paranda and Punta.
Garifuna drums and rhythms are dynamic, exciting and quite different to the African djembe drums and rhythms you might know, thanks to the fusion of African and indigenous Amerindian history of the Garifuna. Lessons are adapted to your skills and experience - from total beginners, to professional percussionists. I don't use formal music or drum teaching methods, but instead use hands-on methods that anybody can learn from.
Other things to note
